Code of Conduct

We encourage you to review our complete code of conduct before purchasing a ticket, engaging in online discussions, or attending the conference. Don’t let it overwhelm you—these straightforward guidelines are designed to ensure a positive experience for everyone involved.

Why do we have a Code of Conduct

The SoCraTes conference aims to foster an inclusive and welcoming environment for attendees from diverse and varied backgrounds.

Our mission is to create a space where everyone can learn, teach, share ideas, network, and enjoy themselves. Achieving this requires inclusivity and a safe, welcoming atmosphere for all participants. While we encourage lively discussions and even disagreements, they must happen within clear boundaries. This Code of Conduct outlines the rules and limits necessary to ensure a positive and respectful experience for everyone.

Safe environment

We are dedicated to maintaining a friendly, safe, and welcoming environment for everyone, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, programming language preference, abilities, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or religion (or lack thereof). We invite all participants of SoCraTes and its community to contribute to creating positive and inclusive experiences for everyone. Together, we can make this conference a memorable and enjoyable event for all.

  • Treat everyone professionally. Everyone at the conference is a professional in their field. Approach all attendees as equals. Always ask before offering to teach or explain something—don’t assume. The person you’re speaking with may know more or have a different perspective on the topic.

  • Be welcoming, friendly, and patient. Give others the benefit of the doubt, and take the time to ask questions before making assumptions.

  • Show respect. Disagreements are natural, but they don’t justify poor behavior or manners. Frustration can arise, but it must never lead to personal attacks. Stay constructive, even in difficult conversations.

  • Consider the impact of your words. Conduct yourself professionally and kindly. Avoid insults, put-downs, or any form of harassment. Exclusionary behavior of any kind is not acceptable.

  • Be mindful with humor. Jokes that cross boundaries or violate the Code of Conduct are not tolerated, regardless of intent.

  • Acknowledge when you don’t know something. Encourage others to do the same, and avoid ridiculing anyone for admitting gaps in their knowledge. We’re all here to learn and grow.

  • Approach alcohol responsibly. For the best experience, we suggest limiting alcohol consumption to evenings and nights. While other guests at the venue may drink during the day (e.g., weddings), we can arrange alcohol-free spaces if needed. Please let us know if this would help!

By following these principles, we can ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all attendees. Thank you for helping us make SoCraTes an exceptional experience!

Unacceptable Behavior

The following behaviors are considered unacceptable and will not be tolerated:

  • Harassment and exclusionary behavior, including deliberate intimidation, threats, or actions that isolate others.

  • Aggressive or sexualized language and content, including unwanted sexual advances.

  • Insulting or demeaning remarks directed at other participants.

  • Disclosing a participant’s identity or affiliation with a particular group or channel without their explicit consent.

  • “Well-actually” comments, such as telling someone what they “really meant to say,” which can undermine or dismiss their contributions.

  • Any other actions that could reasonably be deemed inappropriate in a professional environment.

These guidelines are in place to foster a respectful and inclusive atmosphere. Thank you for helping maintain this standard.
